Dedicated blog to our boy/girl twins. Affectionately coined "Marshmallows" since before they were born. These are our adventures in parenting twins...

Day 85/365
Day 85/365. Marshmallows checking out the view from their re-arranged cribs. Eirin has been using the changing table as leverage to climb out of her crib and onto the changing table and then lowering herself onto the floor from the changing table. She's been doing this for the past couple of months; creating mayhem every time by tossing books & toys, spreading Vaseline and that white diaper rash ointment all over herself, their toys, the walls, the furniture, pulling out every single baby wipe out of its container.....it was like a tornado hit their room! Liam was able to climb out successfully a couple of times as well but never made it down from the dresser, he's the cautious one. I knew it was time to do something to try to contain them in their cribs a bit longer and finally re-arranged their room. I don't know how long this new layout will keep them in, but I hope it lasts for a while. Here's to wishful thinking.

Day 84/365
Day 84/365. A night with their Abuelita. Last minute plan to head out for a movie night, glad my mom was able to watch and put the kiddos to bed for us.

Day 81/365
Day 81/365. Park time. It has been so warm lately that Mallows are enjoying a lot of time outdoors. I got to my mom's house to pick them up after work and didn't find anyone at home, walked over to the park and found them swinging away. Major tantrums when they realized we had to leave!

Written in March
A bit of poetry on this beautiful spring day. Here's an excert from "Written in March" by William Wordsworth
Like an army defeated
The snow hath retreated,
and now doth fare ill
On the top of the bare hill;
The plowboy is whooping- anon-anon:
There's joy in the mountains;
There's life in the fountains;
Small clouds are sailing,
Blue sky prevailing;
The rain is is over and gone!
Like an army defeated
The snow hath retreated,
and now doth fare ill
On the top of the bare hill;
The plowboy is whooping- anon-anon:
There's joy in the mountains;
There's life in the fountains;
Small clouds are sailing,
Blue sky prevailing;
The rain is is over and gone!
Day 78/365

Day 76/365
Day 76/365. Baby girl got her ears pierced. Unexpectedly stoic child. Her Mama is a wimp, however.
I had always assumed I'd have my infant daughter's ears pierced soon after birth just as mine were but I just couldn't fathom taking an infant to the mall to get this done. I clung to the idea of having a nurse at a doctor's office do it, but unfortunately her pediatrician's office doesn't pierce ears. They recommended we go to the mall. Great, thanks for the tip!
I know there are people who will criticize our decision to pierce her ears this early; they'll mostly argue that we took the choice away from our child, that it would have been better to wait until she could ask for them. It is probably a cultural thing, but I simply don't see anything wrong with babies having their ears pierced. My issue was that as time went on I thought I had missed the window of opportunity. Wouldn't it be worse to have Eirin's ears pierced now that she was older? Wouldn't she be more aware of the pain and more apt to touch her ears and risk infection? I also thought about her brother. Now that they're older, they are constantly pulling, rough-housing and sometimes even bite each other. What if Liam got hold of one of those earrings and hurt her accidentally? So, I would forget about it, let time continue to pass by.
In the past couple of months Eirin has on a handful of occasions grabbed hold of my earrings and then pointed to her own ears. "Baby girl, do you want earrings like Mama's?" I asked. She eagerly nodded yes. So, today, finding ourselves at the mall, my mom asked if we should just get it done already! What are you waiting for? I had discussed this with David before, so I called him to confirm that he was still OK with it, which he was. So we schlepped it over to the piercing pagoda, only to be told that we'd have to wait until they had 2 staff members there, she explained that it is best to pierce both ears at once, which makes complete sense. We waited, I picked out a cute pair and braced myself for the screams. Baby girl was amazingly good, she did not make a peep and loves her earrings to boot. Easy as pie...

Saturday Night Exchange
Eirin crying out from her crib: "Baby, baby, BABY...."
As Eirin's cry becomes increasingly more panicked:
Me: "When you checked on the kids, did you take her baby away?"
D: "Um...yeah, I thought it was in the way."
Me: "Better get back in there and give it back."
D: "Didn't realize she needed that thing to sleep."
Eirin has in the past couple of days become so attached to her baby doll. She insisted on sleeping with it tonight....

Time
Seems there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done. I am sometimes spent, the 2.5-3 hours I spend commuting daily really don't help. We really need to move so we're not spending so many hours driving. Wouldn't it be nice to get home by 5? Spend some time with the kiddos at the park before dinner and bedtime? What was I thinking when I agreed to live in Franklin? It's a nice town and all, but it is sooooooo far away from the city, from work, from my friends and family. When will the damn real estate market get better so we can start looking for a house and move already? I feel like I've been patient long enough. As you can tell, it's been a hell week at work and a long day! I'm glad tomorrow is Friday. :)

Language Delays
Taking the kids to see their pediatrician is getting to be more and more difficult because they hate it, one look at poor Dr. Henry and they start crying/screaming like they're being physically tortured. They both cling to me for dear life and generally don't stop panicking until they pick out their "Reach out and Read" books and stickers to take home. We were there last month for their 2 year physicals, the appointments were on their actual birthday. Marshmallows are growing like weeds. Eirin is in the 99th percentile for height and 90th for weight, Liam is 90th for height and weight too. To think they were both just over 6 pounds at birth....amazing. When looking at their growth charts at their 15 or 18 month visit, their pediatrician called them the Baby Giants.
During the visit, Doctor asked me to estimate the number of words each kid has. I really hadn't been keeping count....they can both say Mama, Papa, Dodi, Hi, Bye, Agua, Choos (for juice). The Doctor then asked, would you say they know 30 words? Um...NO! At this point I was internally freaking out...thirty, did he say 30? Should they know 30 words? They're 2, it seemed like a lot. He then asked if they were putting 2 word phrases together. Hmm, they say "Hi, Mama." Does that count? This conversation wasn't getting any better. FREAKING OUT
Anyhow, he suggested an Early Intervention evaluation for each kid. It's actually a nice program mostly funded by the state, they do in-home evaluations to determine if the child has developmental delays, it's measured on some sort of scale. If the child qualifies for services they develop an Individual Service Family Plan and provide services to the child up to age 3.
A team of 3 women came last Friday to evaluate Liam. They mostly sat and "played" with the kids and asked David and I a series of questions. Eirin's evaluation is this coming Friday. So turns out that Liam qualified for services b/c his expressive language is delayed and he'd benefit from in-home sessions with a speech therapist. We'll see how Eirin scores on the test on Friday.
I didn't realize that multiples sometimes lag in expressive language. Although their receptive skills and understanding of language are not lagging, they're not communicating verbally. I'm not really sure I understand why. David thinks it might be because they're learning 2 languages, but I don't agree. The women did explain that sometimes when another skill, such as motor skills are well developed another skill may lag. I know the kids will learn to talk eventually, but I don't want them to get too far behind because they'll forever be playing catch-up. Will report back on Eirin's evaluation.
